Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in word associations as a young toddler. Ford began performing in her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor fit there. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
